Could You Pass a Knowledge Test?

Test your knowledge of safe driving and rules of the road by taking the 
CSS Sample Test.

NOTE: These questions were created by CSS Driver Training and generally reflect the types of questions asked on the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) knowledge test for new drivers. They were not taken from the MTO test. Students wishing a text to study for the MTO test should refer to the Official Driver's Handbook published by the MTO.
  
  
 

1. In Ontario, a driver will be given 7 demerit points if he/she is convicted of: 
  1. Following too close
  2. Failing to stop for a stopped school bus with its red alternating lights on
  3. Failing to remain at the scene of an accident
  4. Failing to obey the directions of a police officer
2. In Ontario, a first conviction for drinking and driving can bring a minimum license suspension of: 
  1. 6 months
  2. 12 months
  3. 24 months
  4. 48 months
3. In Ontario, it is legal to turn right on red: 
  1. Only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop
  2. Only from a one-way street to another one-way street
  3. Only from a two-way street to another two-way street
  4. Only from a one-way street to a two-way street
4. A streetcar is stopped to load and unload passengers. A driver of a motor vehicle is approaching this streetcar from the rear. The driver must stop: 
  1. 2 metres from the rear-most door at which the passengers are getting on or off
  2. 3 metres from the rear-most door at which the passengers are getting on or off
  3. 6 metres from the rear-most door at which the passengers are getting on or off
  4. 9 metres from the rear-most door at which the passengers are getting on or off
5. When approaching a level railway crossing with the gates down, the driver of a motor vehicle must: 
  1. Stop 1 metre from the gates
  2. Stop 3 metres from the line
  3. Stop 5 metres from the first rail
  4. Stop 15 metres from the railroad crossing
6. At a pedestrian cross-over, motorists and cyclists must: 
  1. Yield right-of-way to the whole highway
  2. Yield right-of-way to the whole roadway
  3. Cyclists do not have to yield right-of-way at pedestrian cross-overs
  4. Yield right-of-way to people that are in the drivers' or cyclists' half of the roadway
7. Under the Graduated Licensing System in Ontario, the supervising driver must not let their Blood Alcohol Concentration exceed: 
  1. 0.00 g%
  2. 0.08 g%
  3. 0.05 g%
  4. 0.80 g%
8. When approaching an intersection controlled by stop signs, where there are no lines on the road and no sidewalks, the legal stop position is: 
  1. Where you can see clearly
  2. At the stop sign
  3. Before the stop sign
  4. At the edge of the travelled portion of the roadway
9. You the driver are approaching a marked pedestrian cross-over on a multi lane roadway. You see that it is clear (no one wanting to cross the road), however there is a car stopped at the right side of the road 5 metres before the cross-over line. You must: 
  1. Slow down and proceed with caution
  2. Stop beside the car first, look for people crossing, then proceed
  3. Continue to drive through at a safe, steady speed
  4. Stop 5 metres from the rear of the stopped car, then proceed
10. A good driver always remembers to look: 
  1. 15 to 20 seconds ahead, sidewalk to sidewalk or wider, and behind
  2. 15 to 20 feet ahead, side to side and back
  3. 15 to 20 metres ahead, side to side and back
  4. At the car in front, the sides, and the back
11. A good driver always: 
  1. Checks traffic in front before braking
  2. Checks for loose items in the car that may move before braking
  3. Checks the blind spot before braking
  4. Checks mirrors before braking
12. A good driver always checks his/her mirrors: 
  1. Every 10 to 15 seconds
  2. Every 3 to 5 seconds
  3. Every 15 to 25 seconds
  4. Every 20 to 30 seconds
13. The following sign means: 
    Traffic Sign
  1. This road bends sharply to the right
  2. The driver must turn right
  3. This lane must turn right
  4. This lane is going to end
14. The following sign warns: 
    Traffic Sign
  1. Of a temporary stop ahead
  2. Of a stop sign controlled by a traffic control person
  3. Of a stop sign ahead
  4. Of a hidden stop sign ahead
15. The following sign means: 
    Traffic Sign
  1. This is an intersection
  2. This is a railway crossing
  3. Children will be crossing here
  4. Children will be crossing the road during school hours only
16. The following sign means: 
    Traffic Sign
  1. Motorists must not make a "U" turn within 20 metres of this sign
  2. Motorists must not make a "U" turn within 10 metres of this sign
  3. Motorists may only do a 3-point turn to turn their vehicle around to travel in the opposite direction
  4. Motorists must not turn their vehicle around in the roadway to travel in the opposite direction
17. The following sign means: 
    Traffic Sign
  1. You must give the right-of-way
  2. You must take your right-of-way
  3. There is a slow moving farm vehicle ahead
  4. You must merge with other traffic on the road
18. In Ontario, a solid yellow line at the left of your lane means: 
  1. It is illegal to pass
  2. It is unsafe to pass
  3. It is illegal to cross over
  4. It is legal to pass
19. It is legal to do a "U" turn: 
  1. 10 metres from a R/R crossing
  2. 10 metres near the crest of a hill
  3. In an intersection controlled by traffic lights
  4. 10 metres from a bridge
20. When a approaching a stopped school bus from the rear with its red alternating lights and stop arm out, all drivers must stop: 
  1. 5 feet from the rear of the bus
  2. 2 metres from the rear of the bus
  3. 2 car lengths back from the rear of the bus
  4. 20 metres or 65 feet back from the rear of the bus
21. When travelling on a one-way street, you see and hear an ambulance with its siren on coming towards you from the rear; what does the law require you to do? 
  1. Pull to the right or left and stop
  2. Pull to the left only and stop
  3. Pull to the right only and stop
  4. Slow down and let the ambulance pass you on your right
22. In Ontario, it is legal to turn left on a red light when turning: 
  1. From a two-way street to a one-way street
  2. From a one-way street to a two-way street
  3. From a two-way street to a two-way street
  4. From a one-way street to a one-way street
23. When parallel parking on an uphill on the left side of a one-way street with a curb, all drivers should angle their front wheels: 
  1. Towards the curb (left)
  2. Away from the curb (right)
  3. Do not need to angle wheels if you use the parking brake
  4. Always turn them to the right regardless of the hill
24. When approaching an intersection where the signal lights are not working, you should: 
  1. Yield right-of-way to vehicles within the intersection and to vehicles entering the intersection from your right
  2. Stop and wait until the intersection is clear
  3. Park the car and direct the traffic yourself
  4. Slow down and proceed with caution
25. Snow removal vehicles have flashing lights of the following colour: 
  1. Red
  2. Yellow
  3. Green
  4. Blue
